ok thanks...Have a full day planned so may be later before I can get to it.

ETA:  Just took a quick look.  I remember now I did try to get into the recovery but I got to a screen that kept asking for me to put the floppy in the drive and press ok.  I don't have a floppy in this computer and of course could not figure out how to make it ask for the cd instead.

Maybe there is something in the set up that I need to change for it to stop looking for a floppy.

If you are using the XP installation CD, you shouldn't ever be prompted for a floppy.  M$ gave up on floppies after W98.  Can you try it again and give a detailed description of where it is getting confused???

I can tell you without redoing it.  I clicked R and it goes to a blue page that ask for me to put a disc in drive a:

It has happened many times when I run an installation on various computers it will find the cd then when it gets to the part where it has to reboot it will ask for a disc in a:  .  Usually I just keep rebooting on the cd till it kicks in the right way but after 5-6 tries the other night when trying to do a recovery I just gave up.

After doing a Google search, a lot of people complaining of the same problem of rebooting when entering the Recovery Console say that it is caused when the Recovery Console has not been installed.  When you installed XP, did you use a Recovery CD provided by the manufacturer or did you use an XP installation CD?  If you used a Recovery CD from the OEM, then it is possible that they didn't include the XP Recovery Console in the XP install, so you will need to install it before you can access it...

Well at least that makes sense.
I have always installed from the OEM CD.  I have never bought a preloaded pc as I always buy the parts I want and build the pc.

I just can't understand what would be gained by not installing the Recovery Console.  I doubt that would free up much space on the HDD...

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

If this isn't included on your OEM CD and if you don't have a copy of the XP install CD laying around, I'm not sure how you would go about installing the Recovery Console...

Ok, this is what I found if you need it:

Recovery console for those without an XP disk
