| Laptops scare me, they have been known to catch fire. I always worry about leaving mine on, I know they stay cool with the lid closed but... its not worth the risk so anymore I try to shut it off before I close the lid. |

When I decided to purchase a laptop, I went thru BB feeling all the keyboards of those that were on. I did find them that were cooler but do not know if it had to do with being connected to the net or not. I remember when I first felt the massive amount of heat on my lap, I thought something was wrong and ran back to BB. And then I logged on a Notebook forum and learned heaps about the heat and more.
As for shutting the lappy down, my main concern over the desktop would be is if I am frying my unit by not doing so as hot as it gets... hmmm... |

I saw a video once where a laptop burst into flames.
Not long ago my laptop wouldn't boot up so I palyed with it, squeezed it here and there, wiggle wires, removed the battery, shock it, turned upside down and finally it would start. This worked twice, then wouldnt so I was about to give up when I remmebered it slid on its side once so I unplugged it and it started. I have been doinf that ever snce but I think it healed itself somehow and I probably don't need to unplug it. funny how things work sometimes, or don't work. I still have a $90 fab sitting there ready to put in LP, but I think its been a cord probablem all along.
I keep my lp on a board because it gets so hot. The board goes from one chair arm to the other so it handy as heck and cool too. |

I purchased one of those fan thingys which ha 4 USB slots as well and it plugs into the lappy's USB. I am not sure if that is resourceful or not but it helps if it is on a table. I do NOT recommend it for the LAP. One night, I was working on my laptop and the fan send electric numbness in my legs. I swear... I tried it again and it happened again. Because the fan's area underneath is exposed, must have been the direct contact to almost skin (had clothes on). It was not a good feeling. I have since put a thin nicely cut piece of cardboard between it and anything else. But the fan blows through the keyboard and feels good when I can remember to plug it in.
There is a cushion laptop holder that seems good and then they are several other types of fan thingys for keyboards as well. They cost about 30 - 70 bills. This one was about 45. |

Thos fans sound interesting, thats what I need. Diane sat it on her footstool and it blacked out, think it was starved for error so thats a no no.
I noticed on my new xp on my vista desktop that after about 6 burns it starts to freeze up and vista did not do that, go figure. I noticed if I let it sit for a minute with dvd tray open it works fine. It must get hotter with xp but the computer is mostly empty space with lots of venting. I think there is some improvements with vista hidden in all the bad. |

This is not a recommendation as I cannot find the one I actually own. There's no name/logo on it. It only has one fan, wish it had more. So research them to match your needs, of course.
One model
Look at the features like:
extra USB ports, if needed
noise level
usage time
material it's made of
table top or your lap comfort
how long it will last
portability
and whatever else for your needs.
Good luck!! |

| I was wondering what they looked like, thanks for posting. My lp really doesn't ru the fan much so it must stay cool, but then I don't do much with it except surf the web. When I watch videos the fan runs more. |

Here it is. I have the Ergo Fan Riser. And then there's the cushion types too. My Circuit City had one that pillowed at the bottom and was hard surface on top for the laptop. Looked to cumbersome for me.
Any I think I'm done. (laughs) |

| I like some of those stands, I need one that somehow sits on floor that I can swivel in place. Maybe in the future they will make recliners with something like that. My board works fine but its difficult getting up and risky handling the lp. |
