Boy am I lost. I have downloaded many of the spam mods that I wanted to try but I like to go to the database and re-read things people have experienced when installing and found that the PHPbb database is not the way it used to be.
Unless I am being super dense things are not in the catagories they used to be in. |

The phpBB.com site went down for nearly 2 weeks about 3 weeks ago. They said that they had a double-disk failure while funning routine maintenance, but I have a feeling that they were probably hacked and lost everything but don't want anyone to know. The fact that they haven't been able to restore the phpBB MOD Database yet seems to support my theory...
Hopefully in the future, they will get everything back to normal. If they had been doing things correctly, they would have had good backups of everything. The fact that it took them almost 2 weeks to bring things back and that everything is very different now tells me that either they weren't maintaining good backups or they were storing the backups on the same server that went down and all was lost...

Hacked! They must have installed the most secure things on their website/server than also phpbb.com can be hacked!
If phpbb.com you think had been hacked than there our phpbb forums are not at all secure?
Sorry for being off-topic but I was wondering what will happen to other phpbb forums If the provider or BB can be hacked! |

PhpBB.com has been hacked before and they were up front about it. But that really tarnished their reputation. That's why I believe that if they were ever hacked again, they wouldn't admit it if there was no proof of what happened. The first time that phpBB.com was hacked, I believe it was after a flawed phpBB Update, I believe ti was 2.0.13. So after they brought the site back online, there were a series of security updates to fix the flaw that they had introduced in a previous phpBB Udpate...
I believe they have now switched to Olympus in phpBB.com. That's why the look and feel is so different now. They may have felt that Olympus would be more secure than phpBB 2 or they may be close to an official release of phpBB 3...

I doubt that we are at as high of a risk as phpBB.com. There are more people gunning for them than for us. We are small potatos compared to phpBB.com, so a successful hacking attempt against us wouldn't be nearly as fullfilling for the hackers as it would be against phpBB.com. I doubt that we have that much to worry about as long as our host maintains their security and we don't get silly about our's...

Right. They will go for phpbb.com instead of hacking ours. I do keep backups on server as well as in my PC for MySQL as well as of Database from ACP |

If you are maintaining good backups of both your database and forum files, then the hackers can never seriously hurt you. Even by chance that you are hacked, you should be able to quickly recover from it. One of our members was recently hacked but we found out that it was caused by dangerous file permissions. So that problem is now fixed and it didn't take long to bring the forum back online...
If phpBB.com was maintaining good backups, they would never have been down for as long as they were this last time whether they were hacked or actually experienced a hardware failure as they stated. I think someone failed to do their job over there...

After getting good copies of your phpBB files, you only have to download new backups if you have made changes to them. Since you have a busy forum, you may want to create good backups of your database at least once per day, if not more. It really depends on how much you are willing to lose should the worst ever to occur. Hopefully your host is maintaining good backups as well so if there is a problem with your backups, they may be able to rescue you. But you should never count on a third party to be doing their job correctly...
