The auto_increment setting wasn't assigned to your rank_id field like it should have been. This is what I had to do in your phpMyAdmin to correct the problem on the phpbb_ranks table. I clicked on the edit icon next to rank_id on the Structure tab:
Then I changed the Extra setting to auto_increment, then I pressed the Save button:
That corrected the problem. Of course I had to delete the Test manager record since it's rank_id was set incorrectly, then I re-added it...

Let's hope there isn't a next time. The settings shouldn't be changing once you get them set. I really had to look around quite a while to find this since I don't use phpMyAdmin to maintain my database. Problems like this are a lot easier to fix using MySql-Front...

If you maintain good backups of your database, then the fear factor shouldn't be nearly as bad. You should be able to recover from any mistake if you are prepared. With your fear, you are probably much less likely to make a mistake than someone who actually has very little fear of it. I imagine that you would double and tripple check every move before acting, which could save you from doing something dumb that would need to be fixed. I'm probably more likely to make a mistake in the database than you are. I could probably fix my mistakes faster though...

Yes, those automatic database backups can eat up a lot of space quickly. I installed the phpBB Security MOD on our Test forum, then forgot about it. I had noticed that we were using a lot of web space in our CPanel, but it never occured to me that the automatic database backups from the Test forum was responsible. I deleted over 6 GB of database backups from the Test forum yesterday. I sure am glad we had a lot of space or it could have shut us down until I found the cause...

| i keep on track of it coz i know iv had probs with space on mine with one of the other hosts iv been on, but i really dont think it will run out, my friend kept saying it slows the forum down and with all the posts i keep etc, but i can see how thats possible myself unless im running out of space, but im sure its unlimited or so much that theres no way i can fill it all up! |

It really shouldn't slow down your server anymore than storing 1000 files on your PC would slow it down more than storing 100 files on your PC. Storing files does not affect the performance of the server unless it is running out of space on the HDD and is spending a lot of time swapping files back and forth and everything becomes fragmented...
