What do you do when a mod doesn't install properly?
Part of the mod installed but there was a FIND error. Do you finish the mod by hand or do you uninstall what's been done and start from scratch? This mod had SQL changes so I can't run it again
|
When a MOD doesn't install properly, I use EM to Restore the Backups, then I correct the MOD script. If the problem is with the Warning errors, that tells you that EM won't be able to add the MOD code to the template based on the current MOD commands, which are usually too explicit, limiting the number of templates the MOD can install easily into. Usually, you can trm down the FIND and IN-LINE FIND statements so that the MOD can be correctly installed into almost any standard template...
There are some templates that are just too different from standard to be able to do this easily though, so for those, the code may have to be manually added to the template file to get it to work correctly. Sometimes that can be a challenge to figure out on very difficult templates, such as subMerged for example...

This is a perfect example of where the MOD author provided FAR too much information in the FIND command. All it takes is for ONE character to be different or missing for the FIND to fail in some templates. The more code in the FIND command, the more likely that it won't be able to install in the greatest number of templates. With EM, less is best. So this is how I would correct the FIND statements for the templates:
OPEN
users_set_posts_topics.mod
FIND
| Code:
|
#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#
<tr>
<td class="row1"><span class="gen">{L_ALWAYS_ALLOW_SMILIES}</span></td>
<td class="row2">
<input type="radio" name="allowsmilies" value="1" {ALWAYS_ALLOW_SMILIES_YES} />
<span class="gen">{L_YES}</span>
<input type="radio" name="allowsmilies" value="0" {ALWAYS_ALLOW_SMILIES_NO} />
<span class="gen">{L_NO}</span></td>
</tr>
|
REPLACE WITH
| Code:
|
#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#
{ALWAYS_ALLOW_SMILIES_NO}
{L_NO}
</tr>
|
FIND
| Code:
|
#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#
<tr>
<td class="row1"><span class="gen">{L_ALWAYS_ALLOW_SMILIES}:</span></td>
<td class="row2">
<input type="radio" name="allowsmilies" value="1" {ALWAYS_ALLOW_SMILIES_YES} />
<span class="gen">{L_YES}</span>
<input type="radio" name="allowsmilies" value="0" {ALWAYS_ALLOW_SMILIES_NO} />
<span class="gen">{L_NO}</span></td>
</tr>
|
REPLACE WITH
| Code:
|
#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#
{ALWAYS_ALLOW_SMILIES_NO}
{L_NO}
</tr>
|
Save, upload, and try again using EM...
EM only needs only a small amount of unique text on each line of multiple line FINDs to know whether it is looking in the right place or not. It is not necessary to include the full lines of code to tell EM where to find the code. Less is almost always best in EM. The trick is not to simplify the code too much so that EM finds the wrong place to add the code...
If you don't understand why my suggestion above will work, please ask. Once you understand the basics of how to get these MODs to install cleanly, you should be able to install even the most difficult MODs using EM...

Great - I understand completely! When I install by hand I search for just a snippet of code which is just you are saying to tell EM to do isn't it
I've never used EM to reinstall the back ups - how do you do that? |

Yes, EM searches for text much the way you and I do in our text editor. It doesn't need to find the entire line of code but it does have to be an exact match of the code that we are searching for on each line. So the best thing is to make the FIND statements as simple as possible without simplifying them too much. That increases the odds dramatically that the MOD will install on the most number of boards and templates without problem...
Restoring EM Backups
If a MOD that you installed with EM hosed your board or you decide that you just don't want it, simply go into EM History in your ACP MOD Center and click on the Details button next to the MOD entry..
On the bottom of the next page, select Restore Backups and press the Go button. Make sure you DON'T select the Remove Record option or you will be forced to manually rolll back the EM backups that were created for you. I will have to walk you through that if need be...
Next you will see a page to confirm eht operation. You would choose Yes:
MODs can only be uninstalled in reverse order that they were installed: FILO (First In, Last Out). So if you installed a MOD, then several others, then decided to remove the first one, you would have to Restore the backups of the other MODs before you could Restore the backups on the first MOD...
Restoring EM Backups (Manual Instructions)
If you are unable to get into the ACP, you will need to use these manual instructions to Restore the EM Backups...
Download the backups folder that EM created for you in the MOD sub-folder found in admin/mods. Strip the .txt extension from each file in every folder in the backups folder. So the resulting file extensions will be php, tpl, css, and cfg. Upload the files back to their proper locations on your board; i.e.
- copy backups/admin/*.* to phpBB/admin/*.*
- copy backups/includes/*.* to phpBB/includes/*.*
- copy backups/language/lang_english/*.* to phpBB/language/lang_english/*.*
- copy backups/templates/subSilver/*.* to phpBB/templates/subSilver/*.*
- copy backups/*.* to phpBB/*.*
Of course if you have alternate templates and language folders, you will need to copy the files for them as well. I'm referring to phpBB as your forum's root folder in the above copy commands. If your root folder has any other name, just substitute phpBB with the name of your forum's root folder name...

It's good to know how to do this. It probably will save you many, many times if you plan to continue installing MODs on your board. It's certainly saved me many, many times...
