I was advised by nightrider as follows : I use smartftp .How to set folder and file permissions separately ? I thought if you set a folder permission all file permissions will be automatically set as well.

There is no need to set the permissions on all of your files to 755. If they are set to 644, that is fine. Your folder permissions should be set to 755 though...

The only way the file permissions would be set too is if you pressed the 'Apply changes to the folder, subfolders, and files" option. You really don't want to use that option unless your host requires that your file permissions be set to 755 too. On most servers, it won't hurt if you do it, but there are some that really don't like it when the file permissions are set wrong...

You could click on your phpBB forum folder, then select all the folders in the right panel. You would then right-click and choose properties then enter 755 and press the OK button. That will change all the selected folder permissions while leaving the file permissions set to 644...

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and I believe them. Sometimes it doesn't matter how an explanation is phrased, it can be confusing, so the visual can be very helpful to try to alleviate any confusion...
