I have a portal on my site and we use blue clouds to show new posts.

If members have a PM and they enter the site via the portal they don't get any blue clouds but if they come straight to the index page then the blue clouds are there. If they enter via the portal with no PM then the blue clouds are there.

We've just suggested they bookmark the index page and log in using that but we're curious about why this would be.

I guess its like a 'how longs a piece of string' question but thought I'd pick your brains...lol!

This problem doesn't make any sense to me.  It shouldn't really matter whether your members are entering the forum through the portal or a bookmark, the same code should be executing either way.  So basically your problem is caused by the portal somehow bypassing some of the code.  I don't understand that much how the portals work, but I would be surprised if they would have the ability to change the code behavior on a forum page.  Weird...

Shocked

Once you enter via the portal the clouds that members should be seeing are gone forever, but we do get new ones as new posts happen once we are at the index page.

So basically your Portal is either marking all messages as read or it is clearing the cookies in the browser.  I bet it is the latter.  So as far as the forum software is concerned, all messages have been read after reviewing the forum cookies.  That would be my guess of what's happening...

Some people say it doesn't happen in Firefox but I haven't checked that out yet myself - that would follow through with the cookies thing then wouldn't it?
Its not a biggy but is that fixable? Or too big a job/impossible?

Yes, my guess would be that there is a problem with updating the board cookies in your Portal software but I really don't know what it would take to correct it...
