Nightrider, I received this from Rizzo who was trying to help with my problem.

My problem is:-
I have uploaded a folder titled phpbb to my htdocs folder ie outwith the cgi-bin using ASCII and binary as instructed. When on my browser (Firefox) I enter www.magentatc.com/phpbb/install/install.php I get this error

The requested URL /cgi-bin/php/phpbb/install/install.php was not found on this server.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm at the screaming stage

OK, i spoke to my webguru and he said this
Quote:
The error message doesn't seem to match what he claims to have entered in his browser. I think he's trying to run this from his CPanel or something or he didn't upload all the new phpBB 2.0.19 files to a folder that can be accessed by the public. His folder permissions must be 755 and files must be 644...

If he has done all this correctly, he won't see the error message that he is seeing now...

All my folders are CHMOD 755 and all files 644
I haven't managed to get into my CP panel yet
I am still trying to "install"

Any help would be appreciated. I currently have a phpbb2 board on another ISP which works a treat

There are many things that could be going on here.  On Linux servers, font case is extremely important.  So if your board is phpBB or phpBB2, that is not the same as phpbb or phpbb2...

Also to be able to see your files and folders from your browser, you need to set the folder permissions to 755 and the files to 644.  If you have all these correct and are still getting the error message that you've mentioned, then I would want a closer look to see what you are seeing.  You can PM me with the details.  It's probably something simple to fix...

Ok, I have tried everything I can think of on your FTP Server.  I imagine that you have settings in your CPanel which prevents execution of script in this sub-domain...

Have you checked all the settings for the sub-domain in your CPanel to see if you can change the permissions for www.magentatc.com.  I'm not referring to folder or file permissions either...

Here are a couple of examples of what we have for our sub-domains settings with our current host:

P.S.  I was able to upload a test index.html file to each of the folders in the path, all the way into the install folder and it worked correctly in each.  So my guess is that you have the php permission turned off on this sub-domain...

My ISP(Dutch) says I should reconfigure a php script to get it to work.
"You have to tell the script where it can handle CGI scripts"
I don't think so. So I'm using a free hosted phpbb, which is a pity

Thanks

If you would let me, I would like to take a look in your CPanel to see if there is a setting that you can change to get this to work.  I'm surprised that your Host treated you like this...

You're kidding.  How do you create new databases or sub-domains or control the properties of your domain?  Is it possible that you have a CPanel but you need to ask your host to tell you how to access it???

dontknow
