Strangely, ImageShack periodically changes their path, which breaks their utility.
It doesn't make much sense but they must have a logical reason.
It would be interesting to hear what it is...

Thanks for the heads-up Nightrider... I was expecting a major URI change.
Gladly I saw that an update is not required in this case... both URI will
work... that is exactly the reason why ImageShack updated their URI...

Why do some Web sites include www in the URI while others don't?

A "normal" Web site has a URI that looks like this: http://www.rafikitalk.com - You may have noticed that on many sites, the "www" part is not required. You can just as easily use http://rafikitalk.com or even only rafikitalk.com to get to RafikiTalk. There are other sites that have extra layers of naming, such as http://www.danielschaad.com and http://genealogie.danielschaad.com that seem to use a different word besides "www" to reference different Web sites. Another common thing you see is a name like ftp.microsoft.com, used either with the FTP command or as a URI (ftp://ftp.microsoft.com) in a browser.

The usage of 'www' has it's origin in the way that name servers handle IP addresses. A name server translates a name to an IP address. When you type a URI like htltp://www.rafikitak.com into your browser, the browser contacts its default name server and asks, "Have you ever heard of www.rafikitalk.com?" If this is the first time the name server has heard of www.rafikitalk.com , it finds the .com name server and asks if it knows of the name server handling rafikitalk.com- If so, your name server connects to the name server for rafikitalk.com and asks it about www.rafikitalk.com - If the RafikiTalk name server has a listing for the www prefix, it returns the IP address for www.rafikitalk.com and your browser connects to that IP address. (If the name server does not have a listing for the www prefix, it will not be able to connect you... more about that later)

The network administrator (SwissCheese) for the domain RafikiTalk.com is in charge of mapping the names in the RafikiTalk.com domain to specific machines and their IP addresses. In many large companies, there will be different machines (with different IP addresses) handling WWW, FTP, Telnet and other traffic. On smaller sites (like mine), the same machine can handle everything.

The network administrator makes a list of names and IP addresses, like this:
  • www.danielschaad.com - 198.31.50.20
  • genealogie.danielschaad.com - 198.31.50.21
The administrator can put anything in that list, because the name servers don't care. I could put in scooby.danielschaad.com, scooby.doo.danielschaad.com and scooby.dooby.doo.danielschaad.com, and when someone types in those names the name server will return the IP addresses associated with them.

In the case of Web sites that happen to work without the "www" prefix, it simply means that the administrator has decided that if there is no prefix, the IP address returned should be the IP address for the Web server.

Why ImageShack changed it...

In the old days (1992) when the www was founded and for some years after, it was required for the user to enter the full URI ie: http://www.rafikitalk.com/ including the protocol (http://) the name server (www.) and the domain (rafikitalk.com) - Nowadays people are used to refer websites to each other by the domain name only... Someone may tell you "Yeah... go check out RafikiTalk.com"... Not too long ago, that address would have taken you straight to error-land... and that is, in my opinion, why ImageShack has updated their name server to accept the URI without the www prefix... It guarantees them to receive more visitors... as one can now type in imageshack.com and voilà they are taken straight to their site even though the www was omitted.

Both ImageShack URIs will work - with or without the www.

The reason why they briefly did not (yes, I experienced it as well, Blake)
was due to the name server update being propagated over the internet.

I have just recently been referring to my site as TheAussieAviator.Net. It is even printed on a couple shirts like that. I never thought about that before so I typed it in the browser and was taken to the page with no problems. The address is showing in the address bar as http://theaussieaviator.net/ without the www

Yes... nowadays the URI will work without the www prefix on say
about 80% of all servers... there are still many that do not though...

Here's one of my friends site:

works: http://www.EuroLanguageAcademy.com

does not: http://EuroLanguageAcademy.com

for a business site, that's crucial...

You are very lucky to have it working both ways by default, Glenn!
