The geyser was created accidentally in 1964, after a geothermal power company drilled a test well at the site. While the groundwater in the region turned out not to be sufficiently hot to be tapped for geothermal power, it did have a temperature of more than 200 degrees.

As with most geyser I don't think it's used for anything. But your question makes me think of another one, what happens to the water? Does it go back into the ground to be used again or does it evaporate? That Fly Geyser seems to just keep spewing and spewing. I didn't read all the information, I don't know if it ever stops or not.
