Its not a message board so not strictly phpBB - can I still ask here? 
I would like to be able to add links,Google adsense and to jazz up the background with a repeating gif or something but I'm not sure what to do. The main thing I want to do is the background, the other bits I can probably work out with practicing on a test board. Is there any sites that would have tutorials etc?

No not yet, the script still needs work on it, the guys being quite slow about getting it sorted 
He's had nearly 2 weeks  (I'm not being unfair, when I bought it it should've worked straight away ) |

I think its one he churns out for alot of people, I assumed it would work straight away but we are nearly there now (just need to sort out about CRON)
Its just been hard work, telling him the problems and then him not fixing everything, me asking, getting a bit more done 
Its been very frustrating and although I have more work for him I don't think I could use him as its just too much stress 
He's nice to talk to and has done everything eventually so I can't complain about that. |
