I've searched through hundred of posts about installation problems (most with very vague subjectlines) and found nothing that helped so far.

I'm getting "FTP ERROR: connection to ftp.mydomain.com:21 failed.

Along with the note about port 21. 21 is the normal port for my ftp connection (which works fine with WS_FTP), so that's not the problem. Here's my debug readout:

Testing FTP access...

FTP ERROR: connection to ftp.therightwells.com:21 failed.
This error occurs frequently when the port number is incorrect. Back on step 1 you should try changing the FTP Port from 21 to whatever port you typically use when you FTP.

Any help would be appreciated.

The port error message is deceptive. It's very unlikely that the port number is the problem...

Rescan Option

Ok, do you see a rescan option at the bottom of this page? If so, click on it. Hopefully on the next page, you will be given the Automcatic Detection option. If so, go with it...

That's unfortunate. That works more often than not and when it does, everything typically goes smoothly from that point on...

Does your host require that your file permissions be set to 755 or did you change them? On most servers, the file permissions are set to 644 by default. If your host is one of the exceptions, then you will need to install a modified version of EM on your site...

I did this all a week ago or so, but I believe I set all the dirs and files to 755 (except config.php which I think I set to 777 out of frustration).

IF you set your config.php file to 777, you are giving away all the details necessary for anyone to be able to connect to your database and wipe it clean. You need to set it back to 644 unless your host requires that the file permissions be set to 755...

yeah, I thought maybe just opening it up during installation might help, and then set it back later. I was obviously getting frustrated at not being able to install easymod :^)

Also, I have another phpBB on the same server. All the dirs and files are set to 755. It has easymod installed. I did that a year ago, so I'm not sure what has changed. Same db, just different prefix for tables.

Ok, do this first. Set all of your file and folder permssions back to what are normal for your server. If you are unsure what that would be, you can upload a file and check it's permissions. Your host software should set the permissions correctly for you. Then reset all the rest of the file permissions to match it. Most of your folder permissions should be set to 755. The only exceptions would be your cache and images/avatars folders along with any folder where you allow members to upload files to your server. The vast majority of your folders should be set to 755...

Improper file and folder permissions can cause installation problems so let's get us back so that this is not part of the problem...

OK, I set all the files to 644 and the folders to 755 (though the files in folders are now 755- do I need to manually change teh files in folders to 644?). Also, what should the cache and avatars folders be set to?
