I am playing with this one and not really sure which way to go here. There are 4 mods in one here.

I know you have to install #1.    But that alone doesn't totally work as the blue dot does not show up.
I thought you would have to have #4 because it is database related.

I put in all 4 and found that the blue dot was twice in things I had posted to. (but then I had also replied so maybe it was suppose to?).

Right now #1 and #4 are in. All looks well but then I'm the only one posting on test Smile

I read this:
the first one will highlight topics where user have replied in
the second will highlight topics where user have posted in, reply or topic first post -- meaning it will highlight all their own topics (even if there are no reply) while the first one will hightlight them only if they have add a reply (besides the first post)

I saw this and thought it would aid in peoples request to be able to go where they left off reading.  It would only take them to their last reply in that thread but not really where they left off reading but better than nothing. (am I thinking right?)

*edit* just a little one i thought of, incase anyone wants the image to also be a link to the post.
Code:

But I think that connects to the icon with the little red dot in it and quite frankly I don't like that little red dot.
and also wonder what would happen when I go in and make my own icons.

Anyway that is where I am with the thing right now.

Well I"ve tried to uninstall with EM all the mod parts and even went into the DB and took out the tables that were added but I still have that extra table on the outside left with the pic with red dot.  How the heck do I get it out?

I was reading the 1&3 and there seems to be something you have to do with the left join thing depending on what you want to do. I don't know what to use out of it  dontknow

If you installed Part 3, it probably uploaded some new graphics that may have overwritten the old.  If you don't want them, you may have to find copies of the old graphics and upload them back to your server...

The setting to the graphics is probably in the template cfg file...

Is this what you are referring to???

dontknow

Yes that is what I am refering to.  That to me is double the effort.  The blue dot tells users they have a post in that thread then that other left icon says the same thing.
You only have the blue dot here not that extra table.  The one thing I did notice about that left table is that it has the new post or no new post you dont see that with just the blue dot.
I started a highlight thread on the test board and said what I tested and had the final say/question on the highlight thread.

Very early after starting RCF, I removed that first column from the View Forum page.  I didn't think it was necessary.  But it does come standard with phpBB.  If you don't want it on your board, it can easily be removed by editing your viewforum_body.tpl file...

Well after looking at it for awhile and thinking on what I'm being ask since that table connects to the new/ no new post icon it gives a quick visual to the user as to whether there is a new post to a thread they are participating in or not so along that line of thinking the table stays.

If anything had to go it would be the blue dot....or would that mess up some code? It can stay if need be.

Have you had a chance to look at the code I copied above?  If I understand correctly this will make the Icon in the table (or is it the blue dot) a hot button so that the user can click on it and be taken to where they last posted in a thread.

I can tell you I have been told straight out that one of the major reasons people don't like the phpbb's is because they have to sort through many pages to just find where their last post in a thread is.  A big turn off.
I think most are realizing there is just about no where anymore that you are taken to where you last read (I myself miss that one) so clicking to where their last post is is very important.

The way I look at it, the topics with the newest messages will always move to the top of the forum.  The blue dot tells you which topics you have posted in and the pagination shows how many pages are in the topic.   The date and time is include too telling you when the last message was added to the topic and I added the date and time when the topic was started here in RCF...

You have the ability to go to the first or last topic, depending on whether you click on the Topic subject or the icon next to the name of the person who contributed to the topic last.  If pagination is present, you can go to any page in the topic...

IMO, the icon in front of the topic is totally unnecessary.  It can tell you whether the topic has been locked or not, but since we have never locked a topic here in RCF, that is meaningless as well.  So the icon in front of the topic only takes up valuable real estate and contributes nothing that you don't already have elsewhere.  That's why I removed that column here in RCF...

If the code above was provided by the MOD author and if he stated that it would take you to the last message you posted, it probably will.  But since the code that is being deleted matches the code that is being added, it seems that you already have that functionality but that the MOD author is moving it to a different position on the page.  The best way to find out is to install it and see what happens...

There is a MOD named Keep Unread Flags that supposedly does what you are wanting written by Merlin and asinshesq.  This is the Keep Unread Flags MOD description from the 2.0.5a version.  I know that it has evolved way past that, so it may even do more than what is stated below:

## MOD Description: This mod keeps the unread flags for a topic active until the topic is read.
## It also activates the new post feature for guests.
##
## The following are new features as a result of the upgrades in May 2005 and 2006:
##
## 1. Solves the bugs that sometimes gave a user an unread flag on
## his or her own posts, sometimes gave a user an unread flag on other posts that
## he or she had already read and sometimes caused a user to lose all unread flags.
##
## 2. Keeps unread flags beyond the current page of a topic until
## the user actually visits that page.
##
## 3. Gives the user a new yellow button on each post (right next
## to the quote button) that allows the user to mark the topic unread
## again from that post onwards (a sort of bookmark function).
##
## 4. Changes text of unread post link that appears on index page so that
## it reads "View your unread posts" or "You have no unread posts"
## depending on whether or not the user has unread posts.

O.K. you've convinced me.  How do I remove the column without messing up things?
Is there something to be done to the code before installing that will not create it in the first place or is ti best to just install then remove it?

I'm going to check out the unread flags mod.
