I must say that I´m very surprised by the enormous amount of visible extra´s on your board. It looks to good to be true.
I´ve been looking around a bit and have checked your list of mods installed and downloadable mods.
One mod I couldn´t locate however, and it´s one that I like, is the one that turns a qouted text into a little scrollbar-window with the option to see the whole text. What´s that one called?
And where can I find the Super Quick Reply MOD?
Another thing I´m wondering about: Are all mods installable with EM or not?
Right now I´ve got a board on the air. As I told you in area 51 I had a very sad thing happening to my webmaster. I have been moderating my board for some three years now and now more or less how the ACP works. But I don´t now almost nothing about my webmasters´ part of the job, modifying, updating, working with the server and so on.
When he passed away I started to investigate the technical side of my board and that´s how I entered the most interesting world of php. For the moment I´m not doing anything to my working board, I´m to afraid I´ll screw things up. I installed EasyPHP on my computer and installed a test-board. Which I screwed up a few times allready.
A few days ago I installed eXtreme Styles mod and yesterday I installed Easy Mod. At first I was a bit reluctant about installing many MODs but I´ve allready installed a few simple ones using EM and right now I´ve got a whole bunch of MODs I´d like to install to. That´s why I asked you my first question.
I figure it would be a good idea to make a complete backup of all the complete directory of my testboard before I start installing more MODs, just to help me out just in case things go wrong. Is this so?
What I have in mind is to set up a complete board n local and when it´s all ready load it up to my server, install the database of my working forum and continue with a much more atractive, interesting and easier to handle board. I´m not in a hurry as my working board is funcional and funcioning like this for some years now.
BTW, my actual board is a 2.0.21. subSilver one.
Okay, just to not make this first post a long one I´ll take another walk around your board, checking things out.
Bye from Spain. |

That would be called the Select Expand BBCodes MOD. Markus_petrux has created a lot of nice MODs, including one of my favorites: DHTML Slide Menu for ACP. You can look through the rest of what he has to offer at MODs for phpBB 2.0.x...

The Super Quick Reply MOD comes from the phpBB MOD Database, where most of our installed MODs come from...

EVERY MOD installed in RCF onto 12 templates was installed using EM. For a while we had 24 templates, but I have since cut it down to 12 to make the MOD installs a bit easier...

I'm going to have to get you to help me with the EasyPHP install. I tried it once, but because of my health problems, I was not in the mindset to finish the install. At the time, very little of it made much sense to me...
You should also create a Test board on your Server. Your Test board needs to be identical to your Live board in order for the Test MOD installs to be useful. If your Test board is identical to your Live board, you will know that the MOD installs on the Live board will go exactly the same as they did on your Test board. If you worked out any MOD install kinks in the Test board, the MOD install on the Live board should go smoothly and your community should never be disrupted by a rogue MOD install. If you need help setting up your Test board on your server, I would be happy to help you with it...

It's always good idea to have a complete backup of both your phpBB files and your database. If your community is active, you might want to consider backing up the database several times per week, if not every day. Basically you want to CYB just in case anything ever happens. If you have good current backups of both your phpBB files and database, you can recover from even the most catostrophic failures...
That said, EM creates backups of all files that it modifies and it has a nice utility that you can use to restore your board to what it was before the MOD was installed. So if a MOD hoses your board, you can use the EM Restore Backups utlity to get things back to normal in a short amount of time. And if you can't get into the ACP, you can manually restore the EM backups. I can help you through that if need be...

You can do that if you want. But if you have the space and available databases, you can create a parallel board on your server and update it to the point where you are ready to bring it live. Then you can import your data into your new database, rename the old and new phpBB folders, and your new Parallel board will become the regular board and the switch shouldn't adversely affect anyone. I can help you with that if need be...
Welcome to RCF Dogs and things!!!

I allready found the Super Quick Reply MOD.
Very nice to know that I can ask you for advice/help if I need to.
I had a pretty hard time getting the EasyPHP going but I bumped into a very good maual which helped me out. After all it was so easy I still can´t believe it had me sweating for days. Guess that was because I didn´t have a single clue about php, Mysql, phpmyadmin, Apache etc.
Here´s the link to the only manual I came across that helped me out. I suppose that if it was able to get my EasyPHP going it´ll be able to get anybody going. I found that link on the official Easyphp-site, which unfortunately is in French, language I don´t really understand good enough to read it fluently.
I´ll get back to you later, it´s time to go and take care of some doggies before night falls. |

Thanks for the EasyPHP instructions link. I don't know if these are the same that I was looking at previously or not. It doesn't look familiar though. I will have to take another stab at it when I get the time to work on it...

If you get the latest version of EasyPHP and follow the clear step-by-step instruccions in the manual you got you should get things going in less then half an hour. I used various manuals but only the one I posted got me through all the way. All the others missed out somehow.
You need to open your firewall for the Apache and MySQL and create a database in phpmyadmin and your ready to go. Just take a bit of time to check it out relaxedly and I´m sure you´ll have your local server ready. |

I find it very comfortable to be able to do a lot of testing with my board on my own computer. I don´t know much about working with a testboard on my server yet but I just imagine it´s quicker and easier to first try things on my local host.
I´m glad my suggestion to Nightrider comes in handy to you too. |
